Rewind about 10 years ago and my life & my health looked very different. I was living in Los Angeles managing a fashion brand, living what I thought was my dream job. Managing a multi-million dollar store with a team of 70+ employees and working with celebrities was just another Monday. I was living in the fast lane. My idea of relaxation was being able to fit in a lunch or a kickboxing class, or dancing the night away with my girlfriends. Life in my twenties was seemingly falling into place yet I couldn't help but feel a void in the work that
I was doing.
From the outside my health looked good, however I was struggling with what doctors diagnosed as IBS- their solution was to take MiraLAX. As my digestive struggles continued I begun to experience heart issues-pains in my chest, an irregular heart beat with palpitations, followed by overwhelming anxiety as you may imagine. I went to doctor after doctor trying to find out what was wrong with me and how to fix it. I was prescribed numerous drugs including anxiety medication and beta blockers, all just to mask the symptoms. The frustration and fear grew and I was fed up.
Looking back this was The cataclysmic event that changed the course of my life. I begun to take my health into my own hands. I eagerly jumped down the rabbit hole of nutrition and wellness. It became my mission to seek the truth. Along the way I met an interesting cardiologist from India who introduced a whole new perspective. He asked me- What is going on in your life? What is going on in your relationships? What is it that your heart wants to do in this world that you are not listening to? It was at that point where I begun to think of my body not just as a vessel to live in but as a messenger, an innate intelligence that expressed its imbalances in the form of dysfunction within the body. This was not a realization I had overnight, rather a slow unraveling of the intricate web of who I was and what made my heart truly happy. With the direction of my heart doctor I was told to stop high intensity workouts and focus more on restorative practices. This was new to me as I was always told to go hard, that results came from intensity and sweat. So I traded in the treadmill for a yoga mat. This was a pivotal moment in my journey to wellness, I still say today that yoga saved me. It slowed me down, it allowed me space to connect to my inner self and learn how to listen to and honor my body. It was a transformative, healing practice that provided me the opportunity to shift my mindset.
I spent the next few years dedicated to the practice of yoga and the study of nutrition, mindfulness and all things wellness. I learned how powerful & healing real food could be & how my daily habits impacted my health. I felt enormous improvement in my digestion and my heart issues disappeared. I experienced positive changes in my energy, my moods, my relationships and my outlook on life. I made the personal decision not to take pharmaceuticals. I wanted to get to the ROOT of my issues and address the cause, not the symptoms. I dedicated myself to feeling better and trusting my own inner guidance.
Fast forward to 2015 when I made the decision to leave my lucrative, but stressful career in LA. I had a burning desire to pursue my passion in helping others overcome health challenges and discover how to optimize their nutrition and lifestyle habits to tap into their own healing abilities. To live a life from the heart. Today, I am so thankful for the health challenges I've had, the journey it has taken me on and the process of waking up to my true self. Discovering the ability we all have within us to heal.
I am now a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, a Yoga teacher and an advocate for clean living as a partner with Beautycounter and Norwex. I share my personal story with you because I know how it feels to not find relief from the traditional healthcare system, and I felt very lost at times as I was going through these challenges & changes. I felt frustrated by answers I got (or didn't get) and the reliance on the prescription drug industry to mask the symptoms. I was shocked that the majority of doctors never once asked me what I was putting in my body or what my diet and lifestyle looked like. I believe doctors have an invaluable place in the treatment of disease and acute health crisis, however there is a big gap for preventative care and nutritional education. I do believe pharmaceuticals have their place in treating disease, however we must always look for the reason why illness has occurred. It isn't enough to suppress the symptoms. In order to truly heal we must find the root causes and restore balance. Eating nourishing food supports the body in the process of healing itself. I've seen and felt it in myself and in many clients.
